I will be at your house at 9:30 Wednesday night. You can’t get rid of me that easily. R. J.

Daa-em. We are going to need the troops. First I page Mama. Then I copy R. J.’s note and e-mail it to Collette. Collette is typing furiously. My calls are stacking up, but I want to see what she has to say. I see her look up with fire in her eyes. In a moment, her e-mail appears:

Clyde and I will be by around 8, and we will be packing. You call your mama yet? C.

I nod my head, and a call comes over my private line. “Mama?”

“What’s wrong?” she asks.

Where to begin? “R. J. is coming to our house at nine-thirty tonight.”

She sighs heavily. “He is? Are you sure he said tonight?”

“Yeah. Oh, I also got a major ticket, Giovanni sent me a dozen roses, and I threw up a few minutes ago.”

“And it’s only ten-fifteen? Were the roses that ugly?”

“No, Mama. I threw up because of a bad Pop-Tart.”

“Uh-huh. Bet the flowers were wilted. So what’d you call me for?”

“Mama, I need you to be home tonight.”

“Oh, I will. Gotta go.”

Clicking over to the customer line, I begin my work day with a guy asking me if we can put cable in his Winnebago.

Like the commercial says, “It doesn’t get any better than this.”
